Principal Health Economics and Epidemiology
 
LOCATION - San Diego CA, Morristown NJ, Boston MA or Vancouver/Toronto
 
Provides leadership and strategic vision in the definition, implementation, and management of commercialisation strategy and science (CS&S) consulting services.  If the Principal is a Consulting Center Head, s/he also is a member of the CS&S leadership team, and with other members is responsible for developing both practice-specific and integrated business strategy and direction.  In all cases the Principal will lead or co-lead a consulting center or specific business effort, with joint and individual responsibility for its success.
 
Personal revenue contribution typically $1,250,000 to $2,000,000+, of which delivery credit 50-70%.  Moderately high utilization on billable projects.  May be head of consulting center, region, or practice.  As head of consulting center or region, revenue responsibility up to $7.5 million and staff typically 12-25. 
 
Responsibility for assigned clients and employees within the relevant practice, and driving cooperation across practices and ICON.  May have senior managerial responsibility for a defined consulting center, or joint responsibility for consulting center and practice performance.   Leadership of multiple projects and client relationships, responsible for overall quality of team’s execution.  Responsible for contributing to and meeting defined sales, revenue, and margin targets for consulting center and practice, proactively developing new business and client relationships.  Provides executive project and department overview and acts as point of resolution on projects and resourcing issues.  Broad involvement in staff management, mentoring and organizational development. 
 
The Principal and Consulting Center Head has fiscal responsibility to manage human resources and related costs while ensuring capacity for project sales and delivery. Direct client contact, trusted partner to create business opportunities and deliver differentiated, high-value services.  Recognized by clients as a positive differentiator for the business.  Able to generate follow-on business and manage key accounts, and to prospect new opportunities and accounts.  Drives contribution to thought leadership, staff management, firm building.
 
Strategic
·         Direct leadership of consulting center and/or defined business or organizational development effort and, where appropriate, participation in consulting center and/or practice leadership
·         If Consulting Center Head, participate on CS&S leadership team
·         Provide input and support to the Executive Vice President and practice/consulting center heads in defining and implementing practice and functional business strategies
·         Contribute to the strategic planning and business development processes; work with CS&S business development team to achieve functional targets
·         Develop new and evolved service offerings, integrating practice-specific content expertise with that of other CS&S practices, and other ICON service areas
·         Lead technical development of consultancy practice, resources and skills across the department
·         Actively participate in and promote thought leadership efforts within CS&S
 
People Management
·         If Consulting Center Head, oversee management of 12-25 consulting center staff as part of financial management responsibilities
·         Participate in modelling and communication of company vision and mission
·         Manage dynamic teams in a manner that integrates them across consulting centers and practices
·         Personnel evaluations, and professional learning and development, including development plans for specific roles and teams
·         Recognize the importance of and create a culture of process improvement, adding value to our business, and meeting client needs.
 
Client Relationships, Business Development, and Thought Leadership
·         Participate with other consulting center and practice senior staff and with CS&S business development to create regional and globally integrated account and market development plans
·         Responsible for direct business development with clients and management of strategy to achieve aggregate sales and revenue targets for consulting center and practice
·         Recognized as industry-leading content and business expert by clients, active leadership and participation in thought leadership creation
·         Key point of contact for client relationships, oversee relationship structuring, strategy, and evolution
·         Lead discussions with sensitive market stakeholders (clients, payers, high-level KOLs, high-level industry experts)
·         Achievement of high client satisfaction and repeat engagements
 
Functional Responsibilities
·         If Consulting Center Head, responsible for setting the direction and creating analysis and reporting of an industry-leading consulting center or practice.  This includes strategy planning, tactic identification and implementation, evolution of staff, development of differentiated service offerings, and business process adherence, resulting in high client satisfaction.
·         Lead or participate in creation and implementation of practice and consulting center annual financial plans, update in response to real world conditions as necessary; ensure appropriate alignment of business with delivery capacity as appropriate for consulting business
·         Act as a point of contact for and partner with ICON staff and clients to support differentiated offerings across the ICON business; provide leadership in the integration of clinical and commercial services and participate in cross-functional business development
·         Work with the Executive Vice President to identify expansion opportunities that will drive positioning in the regional and global markets
·         If Consulting Center Head, have financial management responsibilities for consulting center (typically up to $7.5 million) and oversee management of typically 12-25 consulting center staff, coordinate business plan and implementation with other consulting center heads, act as part of the Commercialisation Strategy & Science leadership team
·         Contribute personal revenue to consulting center, practice, and CS&S typically $1,250,000 to $2,000,000+, of which delivery credit 50-70%.  Moderately high utilization on billable projects. 
·         Provide oversight of resourcing, staff development, recruitment activities, and departmental growth
·         Demonstrate and actively promote an open and honest working environment to encourage close teamwork, foster knowledge transfer, and provide clear direction to all employees
·         Recognize, exemplify and adhere to ICON's values which centers around our commitment to people, clients and performance and the furthering of our position as trusted partner
·         Travel (approximately 30-60%) domestic and international
·         Lead contract reviews as necessary
·         Responsible for ensuring team compliance with all relevant SOPs, policies and procedures
·         Other duties as assigned
 
SUPERVISION
·          Support the President, Executive Vice President and peers in the organising, managing and creating vision of the practice
 
·           If Consulting Center Head, participate on Commercialisation Strategy & Science leadership team
 
·          Lead relevant consulting center, practice, or defined strategic business/organizational effort
 
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
·         US/LATAM/CAN:  Minimum of 12 years of experience
·         EU/APAC:  Expert with comprehensive experience
·         Demonstrable experience of people management
·         Demonstrable experience of business development
·         Demonstrable experience of relevant scientific and/or commercial capability
·         Due to the nature of this position it may be required for the employee to travel.  Therefore, dependent on the employee’s location, the employee may be required to possess a valid driver’s license and passport.
·         Master’s or higher degree preferred (required for HE, PRO, EPI practices), or local equivalent, in life sciences, business or related discipline.
