This is an exciting opportunity to work within a fast paced, busy environment for a leading global provider of outsourced development services to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries. A Senior Software Engineer works under minimal supervision as part of a Development Team, and influences the technical direction of one of ICON's products or family of products, At this level a Senior Software Engineer is involved in code review, process improvement, team or project leadership, and the mentoring of other team members; using excellent knowledge of development processes and procedures, a Senior Software Engineer is involved in the timely execution and delivery of tasks in the areas of product design, product development, component testing, quality assurance, and product maintenance.

Overview of the role

  • Travel (approximately 15%) domestic and/or international
 
Job Functions
  • Design and develop and maintain software solutions.
  • Delivers to a high quality standard within agreed time scales.
  • Plans and takes ownership of own work and any issues relating to same.
  • Solves problems that arise in own area of responsibility.
  • Develops technical competence on technologies relating to assignments and other technologies as directed
  • Provides regular feedback to manager and/or immediate lead on work status and problem areas.
  • Provides input to team project schedule.
  • Actively supports teamwork both within own group and across Development, by offering assistance to other team members in an effort to achieve team goals.
  • Participates in code and design reviews
  • Constantly proposes improvements to systems
 
Responsibilities
  • Accountable for following defined processes and procedures, and highlighting in a timely manner any related problems with same
  • Accountable for applying knowledge and ingenuity to solve basic to moderate problems that arise in areas of responsibility, and escalating when necessary.
  • Accountable for the timely execution of agreed objectives, to a high quality standard, under the direction of a Senior Lead.

Business
  • Organization Structure: Has a good understanding of ICON's organization structure, including the role of the PMO, the clinical organization structure and the inter-dependencies between IT and the business
  • Decision Making Skills: Can make decisions within the parameters of own job.
  • Object oriented Design: Strong understanding of OO methods
  • Agile: Good working knowledge of Agile/Scrum principles
  • ICON's Systems: Has a strong understanding of at least one of ICON's systems and a working knowledge of one or more other systems. Understands how these systems are related to business
  • Re-Factoring: Ability to actively re-factor code including identifying opportunities for code re-use
  • Team Lead: Capable of leading a team, acting either as Scrum Master and/or as the technical coordinator
  • A basic understanding of ICONs business
  • Other Duties as assigned.
Supervision
  • Provides technical support to other staff members and acts as mentor for junior staff
  • Mentors team members regarding specific tools/technologies
Role Requirements
 
Bachelor's Degree, or local equivalent, in Computer Science.
  • At least one IT project should be completed as part of academic curriculum

  • Technical/Job Related
Technical Skills:
  • Excellent working knowledge of at least two technical areas and a strong working knowledge of one or more other technical areas:
  • Software Development Technologies
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2003/2005/2008/2010, ASP.Net using C#, ASP.Net using VB.Net (Optional)
  • Java J2EE, J SE
  • XML, HTML, JavaScript, AJAX & Toolsets
  • Net Framework 1.0/1.1/2.0/3.0/3.5/4 .0 (more than one of these)
  • Practical knowledge of Open Source Frameworks (ORM, MVC, Code Generation, Unit Testing , Documentation generation etc)
  • RAD (Rapid Application Development) Tools such as SalesForce.com
  • Working knowledge with one or more source control systems, for example TFS or subversion
  • Database technologies including MS-SQL 2000/2005/2008 and/or PL-SQL
  • Business Intelligence, Data Mart and Reporting Technologies
  • Portal Technology including Oracle Alui Portal and SharePoint
  • Integrataion tools and technologies, including Web Services, SOA, Oracle SOA Suite
  • Agile/Serum tools such as Jira, Conchango Scrum Board
  • US/LATAM/CAN: Minimum of 5 years of relevant IT industry experience
  • EUAPAC: Significant proven experience in the IT industry.
  • Due to the nature of this position it may be required for the employee to travel. Therefore, dependent on the employee's location, the employee may be required to possess a valid Drivers License.
