After I graduated with a Master’s in Organic Chemistry, I worked my way up to a position of Senior CRA, before becoming a Clinical Operations Manager. With two years, I felt ready for another change and saw a role as a Clinical Project Manager (CPM) with ICON. The fact that the job entailed both project and line management responsibilities appealed to me and, after eight years, I’m very happy here.
Since working at ICON, I’ve had the opportunity to move from South Africa to the USA as a CPM which has been a great move. I’m pleased I’ve been offered the chance to move from being a CPM to CRA management too as I’ve enjoyed my career journey so far. As a CRA Senior Manager, I enjoy watching and helping the people who report to me grow and develop their careers – I grew my own career here over eight years so it is a pleasure to help others.
Along the way, I’ve attended CPM Training, Management Essentials training and other management training schemes which have all enabled me develop my management skills and in turn, helped me to facilitate the development of people working for me too. I strongly encourage team-working within my group, but it is equally important to be able to work independently when required.
I’d recommend anyone joining ICON to be committed to the company goal and to have closely aligned goals themselves – it enables all of us to stay motivated and care about our work. A sense of humour doesn’t go amiss too!
