ICON is crowned BEST CRO at the Vaccine Industry Excellence Awards

In October, we were crowned the Best Clinical Research Organisation (CRO) at the Vaccine Industry Excellence (ViE) Awards and we want to share with you what that means to us all at ICON.

Who is ICON?

The pharmaceutical industry has changed dramatically in the last decade, most notably in the last year. We’ve seen wearables reinvent clinical trials, the fastest turnaround within clinical trials and global collaboration on a scale we’d never imagined. But at ICON, we’ve kept pace with the latest developments and we have our talented and dedicated team to thank for that. We know how important it is to support our colleagues and show them how to forge a career in clinical research and in return they’ve shown us how rewarding it is to be recognised for our contributions to the vaccine industry.

Maintaining our standing as a world-class vaccines team

Unlike previous years, the World Vaccine Congress was a virtual event but that didn’t stop the ViE awards from celebrating the most committed and successful companies – and individuals - in the vaccine industry. Sitting on the panel were the Scientific Advisory Board, who gave the final nod of approval to award ICON this prestigious title.

This marks the third year that we’ve won the coveted award, having previously accepted it in 2014 and 2017. Not only that, our company had made it to the finals stage for the award each year since 2011 and we’re proud that our dedication to improving the standards of vaccine research has been recognised. This award could not come at a more poignant time in the history of vaccines and it will serve as a huge morale boost for our vaccines team who are doing everything they can to keep the industry on track.

Our response to Covid-19

As early as February, the team at ICON began mobilising our resources and redeploying them to help in the fight against coronavirus. In this time, we’ve participated in over 100 Covid-19 trials - both for the government and private companies – offering our expertise in clinical monitoring and safety oversight. Some of the most major developments are:

• We began conducting remote trials, or home-based as their otherwise known, to limit the risk of transmission

• Our prophylactic vaccine trial was made possible by our rapid patient recruitment, site section and study start-up

• We’re conducting a study which is researching antiviral treatments for people who test positive for the virus.

 In the past five years, we’ve conducted 246 vaccines studies worldwide of which 40 investigate respiratory viruses.
