We are looking for a Principal, Epidemiology to join our team rated by Forbes as one of America's Best Employers two years in a row.
The Principal serves as the, project director and/or scientific advisor for Epidemiology projects, taking responsibility for the scientific integrity of the research. The Principal also supports the overall Epidemiology Practice business strategy, including business development and client relationships.
- Actively communicates Epidemiology objectives and results with clients, leadership team and all functional partners
- Leads team on data gathering efforts. Selects deliverables, tools & techniques to be applied by the team to conduct the analysis. Learns and draws on new analytic approaches
- Develops strategies for solving scientific/technical problems for Clients and within the Practice
- Provides methodological and strategic support and advice to other branches of ICO and ICON Clinical Research
- Provides mentorship on technical issues related to study design and bias minimization, and analytic planning.
- Acts as scientific thought partner with the client and the project team throughout the project
- Reviews and approves final drafts of project deliverables (e.g., protocols, analysis plans, reports, data tables, and literature search strategies) to ensure they are of a high standard suitable for release to the client
- Coaches junior staff in the application of research methodologies related to the collection, analysis and reporting of observational/’real-world’ data
- Initiates and nurtures client relationships and maintains contacts to build reputation and deal flow
- Regularly pursues new business opportunities and leads the organization to meet changing client needs; responsible for teams’ alignment and support of business development efforts
- Key account lead for a combination of current and prospective clients
- Independently develops project plans and scientific content in proposals and achieves good conversion rate of submitted and won proposals
- Serves as KOL on project methodology, project risk and project execution
- Represents Epidemiology at internal and external meetings and strategy review presentations/overviews
- Maintains positive client contact, serves as critical issue path for unresolved issues as necessary, and initiates client dialogue and updates on project progress
- Develops a comprehensive set of sound recommendations on scientific methods and approaches that help clients meet their goals as well as identify those that will not. Prioritizes recommendations based on ease of implementation and expected impact
- Regularly contributes to external efforts such as International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE), International Society of Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research (ISPOR), DIA, and other for training and business development
- Anticipates key project risks. Actively develops and executes mitigating strategies effectively as required
- Owns one or more strategic functional areas within the Epidemiology business
- Establishes team morale and actively draws in others beyond immediate team to supply expertise
- Ensures that communication across the team is highly effective, including across offices
- Leads staff development of proficiency in department or function-specific software and identifies training needs as appropriate
- Follows all relevant SOPs, work programming, time-keeping, online learning, policies and procedures
- Provides mentoring and/or supervision and is involved with leading staff development
- Provides overall leadership within the ICON Epidemiology Practice through hands-on mentorship and support
- Minimum 10 years’ work experience in a similar role. Extensive academic research experience in a related methodology may offset some of this work experience.
- Direct experience leading a diverse set of bespoke outcomes research studies in collaboration with pharma / biotech / medical device study teams or CRO Clinical Operations divisions
- Demonstrated experience in consulting
- Demonstrated advanced scientific leadership experience and directing project teams
- Able to expertly lead teams on data gathering effort and in formulating, articulating and prioritizing key conclusions
- Ability to work well within diverse project teams
- Excellent communication and scientific writing skills, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, or other scholarly work
- Articulate and persuasive with the ability to draw information well from others
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in methodology around collection, analysis and presentation of observational data
- Ability to run or direct large portfolio of projects in terms of dollar volume and number of projects
- Proven ability to analyze project risks, define mitigation actions of identified risks, and apply lessons learned across projects and during the proposal development stage.
- Able to successfully communicate with and advise clients
- Excellent interpersonal skills both written and oral
- In depth knowledge of applicable guidance documents and scientific guidelines (FDA/EMEA guidance; ISPOR Task Force recommendations/documents, etc.)
- Deep understanding of practical research implementation
- Comprehensive understanding of health outcomes research principles and familiarity with key aspects of the literature (historical and current)
- Bachelor’s degree, or local equivalent, in epidemiology or a related discipline, with a strong quantitative research component.
- Master’s degree or PhD in epidemiology or a related discipline, with a strong quantitative research component preferred.
