This role provides deep epidemiology, methodologic, and late phase study design strategic expertise to external clients and to internal stakeholders by advising strategic study approach, protocol/study design, data interpretation, and selection/use of integrated late phase-oriented study technologies and solutions. The role entails working directly and independently with both senior and mid-level stakeholders from customer organizations as well as advising/mentoring more junior level researchers and scientists internally. This role may be the first technical point of contact with the customer, liaises closely with ICON's Business Development team to optimize strategy to achieve success in winning new business, and with internal teams to optimize methodological approaches to study design and analysis and ensure high quality deliverables to ICON's clients.

- Travel (approximately 20%) domestic and/or international.
- Proactively and independently expands knowledge base on Epidemiologic research methods, and those related to observational study data collection, and follows applicable research trends and best practices
- Efficiently manages own workload with respect to project scope, timelines and quality
- Continually cultivates, develops and maintains positive business relationships with other functional teams and departments within ICON
- Responsible for the development and the driving of continuous improvement initiatives within the Practice
- Proactively communicates Epidemiology objectives and results with clients, leadership team and all functional partners
- Performs other duties and tasks as are allocated at the reasonable discretion of the Company
Scientific
- Directs team on data gathering efforts. Selects deliverables, tools & techniques to be applied by the team to conduct the analysis. Learns and draws on new analytic approaches
- Develops strategies for solving scientific/technical problems for Clients and within the Practice
- Provides methodological and strategic support and advice to other branches of ICO and ICON Clinical Research
- Provides guidance on technical issues related to study design and bias minimization, and analytic planning.
- Acts as scientific thought partner with the client and the project team throughout the project
- Acts as Epidemiology functional lead in cross-functional teams (PMA, HE, eCOA, ICR, PAOR) - project delivery and proposal/strategy development
- Reviews and approves final drafts of project deliverables (e.g., protocols, analysis plans, reports, data tables, and literature search strategies) to ensure they are of a high standard suitable for release to the client
- Reviews and approves methodological and strategic components of proposals including the Epidemiology Practice
- Critically evaluates real-world data sources and data collection methodologies to ascertain suitability for a research question; identifies and highlights data gaps and strategies to address gaps
- Coaches junior staff in the application of research methodologies related to the collection, analysis and reporting of observational/'real-world' data
- Supports other project activities as needed, completes internal documentation and quality-checks the work of others
Client Development & Consultancy
- Leads interactions with clients in the pharma/biotech/medical device industries
- Initiates and nurtures client relationships and maintains contacts to build reputation and deal flow
- Contributes to shaping business strategy and new product/service development
- Regularly pursues new business opportunities and leads the organization to meet changing client needs; responsible for teams' alignment and support of BD efforts
- Key account lead for a combination of current and prospective clients
- Independently develops project plans and scientific content in proposals and achieves good conversion rate of submitted and won proposals
- Serves as KOL on project methodology, project risk and project execution
- Represents Epidemiology at internal and external meetings and strategy review presentations/overviews
- Maintains positive client contact, serves as escalation path for unresolved issues as necessary, and initiates client dialogue and updates on project progress
- Develops a comprehensive set of sound recommendations on scientific methods and approaches that help clients meet their goals as well as identify those that will not help clients meet their goals. Prioritizes recommendations based on ease of implementation and expected impact
- Regularly contributes to external efforts such as International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE), International Society of Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research (ISPOR), DIA, and other fora for training and business development
Project Management
- Takes ownership of final budget, deliverable and project timeline; identifies scope expansion and need for amendments; serves as consultant to other principal investigators or staff on other projects
- Organizes and monitors workloads in line with budget and time to ensure project efficiency and quality of insight
- Anticipates key project risks. Proactively develops and executes mitigating strategies effectively as required
- Operational
- Participates in staff recruitment efforts (phone screening, interviewing, attending presentations, etc.)
- Contributes to the development of internal training presentations and external training opportunities
- Owns one or more strategic functional areas within the Epidemiology business
- If a People Manager functional area owner, responsible for the human resource management activities including maintenance of proper staffing levels, resource optimization, attainment of individual and team goals, employee relations, mentoring, talent/career development, and rewards/recognition based on achievement of goals
- Delegates and ensures completion of special assignments (e.g. job descriptions, handbook updates, SOPs, thought leadership activities)
- Builds team morale, including across offices. Actively draws in others beyond immediate team to contribute expertise
- Ensures that communication across the team is highly effective, including across offices
- Leads staff development of proficiency in department or function-specific software and identifies training needs as appropriate
- Complies with all relevant SOPs, work programming, time-keeping, iLearns, policies and procedures
