Sajna's Biometrics Career Journey
From Data Management to Leadership
For Sajna Basant, a career in Biometrics has always been about more than data.
“Data is not just numbers,” she explains. “It represents real people, their health, and their outcomes.” As Manager, Clinical Data Science at ICON in Bangalore, Sajna leads Clinical Data Management teams supporting studies across Neurology, Inflammation, and Immunology. Over the past nine years at ICON, she has progressed through multiple roles, built and scaled high-performing teams, and helped create an environment where people feel supported to grow their careers.Building a Long-Term Career in Biometrics
Sajna joined ICON in 2017 as a Senior Clinical Data Coordinator before progressing into Trial Data Management, Group Leadership, and eventually her current role as Manager, Clinical Data Science.
She credits ICON’s culture, flexibility, and growth opportunities as key reasons she has continued building her career with the organisation. “The work culture at ICON, the flexibility to balance work and life, continuous learning opportunities, and the recognition of talent all played a big role in my journey,” she says. For Sajna, one of the most rewarding milestones came through ICON’s Internal Job Posting (IJP) process, when she transitioned into a leadership role. “It was a proud moment when my manager trusted my abilities and encouraged me to apply,” she explains. “The support and confidence from leadership motivated me to keep growing.”The Appeal of Sponsor-Dedicated Work
Working within a sponsor-dedicated model strengthened Sajna’s interest in Clinical Data Management even further.
Being closely involved in preparing data for regulatory submissions gave her a greater sense of responsibility, accountability, and collaboration across teams. “Delivering high-quality data requires strong teamwork and close collaboration,” she says. “Ultimately, it contributes to client satisfaction and supports better outcomes.” The sponsor-dedicated environment also provided opportunities to deepen her expertise while working closely with clients and study teams throughout the clinical trial process.Leading Clinical Data Science Teams
Today, Sajna leads Clinical Data Management teams supporting global studies across several therapeutic areas.
Her role combines people leadership, operational oversight, strategic planning, and stakeholder collaboration. A typical day includes connecting with team members, reviewing project deliverables, supporting study delivery, and helping colleagues navigate challenges and career development opportunities.
“I focus on enabling the team to perform effectively while ensuring goals are met on time,” she explains.
One of the aspects she enjoys most about leadership is seeing people grow in confidence and progress in their careers.
“Watching team members take on new challenges and achieve their career goals gives me a strong sense of fulfilment.”
Supporting Career Growth
Creating opportunities for others has become one of Sajna’s biggest priorities as a leader.
Through regular one-to-one conversations, mentoring, and feedback, she works closely with team members to understand their strengths and career aspirations. She also encourages continuous learning through: Hands-on project experience Knowledge-sharing sessions Cross-training opportunities Mentorship and leadership guidance Internal role transitions and IJP opportunities Over the past four years in leadership, Sajna has supported multiple team members in progressing into more senior roles and helped others broaden their experience through lateral moves across programmes. The impact of that investment in development has also been reflected in team growth. “It has been especially rewarding to see the team grow from 16 to 60 members,” she says.Building a Collaborative and Supportive Culture
Sajna describes her team culture as collaborative, supportive, and growth-oriented.
Open communication, knowledge sharing, and teamwork are central to how her team operates day to day. Regular discussions, cross-training, and mentoring help ensure that learning is shared across the wider group.
“We celebrate successes together and proactively help each other overcome challenges,” she explains.
Supporting new team members is another important focus. Sajna ensures new colleagues are welcomed through structured onboarding, mentorship, and regular check-ins to help them build confidence early in their careers.
Prioritising Flexibility and Wellbeing
Flexibility and wellbeing are also key priorities within Sajna’s team.
She believes realistic planning, open communication, and supportive leadership are essential in helping people manage workloads while maintaining work-life balance. “Flexibility is important in Biometrics because project timelines and client requirements can evolve quickly,” she says. “It helps the team adapt while also supporting wellbeing.” To help prevent burnout during busy periods, Sajna focuses on regular check-ins, recognising achievements, and encouraging team members to take breaks and time off when needed. “Making people feel valued helps sustain motivation, focus, and overall team morale.”Life Outside of Work
Outside of work, Sajna enjoys spending quality time with her son, whether that means watching comedy films together, going for walks, or simply having meaningful conversations at the end of the week.
She also enjoys stitching her own clothes, a creative outlet she finds both relaxing and rewarding. Gardening is another passion, and she admits she occasionally talks to her plants while caring for them.“Never Stop Connecting with Your Team”
One piece of advice has stayed with Sajna throughout her career.
“One of the best pieces of advice I received from my first manager at ICON was to never stop connecting with your people.” That people-first mindset continues to shape her leadership approach today. Her personal motto reflects the same philosophy: “Do to others what you want others to do for you.” For Sajna, building strong relationships, supporting others, and creating an environment where people feel heard and valued are just as important as delivering high-quality work.Explore Biometrics Careers at ICON
