Meet Rebeca: Supporting Clinical Research in Mexico as a CRA II
Meet the CRA helping shape a new partnership
Ask Rebeca Rojas Hernández what her dad tells people she does for a living and she can't help but smile.
"He proudly tells everyone that I visit clinics where new medicines are being tested to make sure doctors are following all the necessary safety measures," she says. "He always explains how important those checks are because they help ensure treatments are safe before they reach patients." It's a simple explanation of a role that often happens behind the scenes. Six months into her career at ICON, Rebeca works as a CRA II supporting a sponsor-embedded team in Mexico. Much of her time is spent travelling to research sites, building relationships with investigators and ensuring studies are delivered to the highest standards. While every monitoring visit is different, the purpose remains the same: protecting patients and helping clinical research move forward. One of the first
Joining a brand-new sponsor partnership is something few people experience.
For Rebeca, becoming one of the first CRAs in Mexico supporting this new model has been both exciting and rewarding. "From the very beginning, we've focused on building a strong and collaborative partnership." As the relationship has grown, so has the trust between ICON and the sponsor team. "They rely on me as a CRA and involve me in decisions related to the sites." It's a responsibility she values, and one that's given her the opportunity to help shape how the partnership develops from the ground up."I've never felt this supported"
When Rebeca talks about ICON, one word comes up again and again: support.
Whether it's regular conversations with her manager or guidance from her mentor in Brazil, she says she's always felt encouraged to keep developing. "Even during periods of high workload, my manager always checks in with me and asks how he can support me." Those conversations haven't just been about workload. They've been about where she wants her career to go. When Rebeca explained that she hadn't yet had the opportunity to carry out qualification visits, her manager found a way to make it happen. "It allowed me to develop new CRA skills while applying my previous experience in a new setting." For someone who enjoys learning, it reinforced that development at ICON isn't something that waits for an annual review. It's part of everyday conversations.A suitcase, a monitoring visit and a cycling studio
Rebeca spends a lot of time travelling, but one thing rarely changes: her exercise routine.
Whether she's at home in Mexico City or visiting a research site elsewhere in the country, she'll usually look for a place where she can keep up her indoor cycling, boxing or Pilates classes. It's become her way of maintaining balance while discovering new places across Mexico. That consistency helps her recharge, stay focused and make the most of life on the road.Growing through change
One quote has stayed with Rebeca throughout her career.
"The life you want will cost you the life you have." For her, it's a reminder that growth often comes with change, and that embracing new opportunities is usually worth stepping outside your comfort zone. It's an outlook that's shaped her first six months at ICON, from joining a brand-new sponsor partnership to developing new skills and building relationships across teams. Looking back, she's confident she made the right decision. "I've worked in clinical research for five years, but I've never felt this level of support for my professional development."Build your future with ICON
Whether you're starting your CRA career or looking for your next opportunity, ICON's sponsor-embedded teams offer the chance to build long-term partnerships, develop new skills and work alongside colleagues who are invested in your growth. It's an environment where you can continue learning while helping deliver clinical research that has the potential to improve patients' lives.
