A Career Focused on Patients: Daniela's Journey at ICON

Daniela’s Journey at ICON

Daniela Gutierrez’s career at ICON has been a journey of transition, determination, and purpose. What began as a role in study start-up has evolved into a position deeply rooted in patient care - a shift that reflects both her personal values and the opportunities available within ICON for those willing to pursue them.

Today, as she steps into a new role in Drug Safety, Daniela reflects on her path, the support she’s received and what it means to work in a company where every role connects back to the patient.

Joining ICON - A Foot in the Door

When Daniela joined ICON, she started as a Study Start Up Associate, supporting site activation in the US. “My role was about negotiating contracts and budgets so sites could begin clinical research,” she explains. However, she was drawn to a career where she could make a more direct impact in patient’s lives.

At the time, she wasn’t sure which direction she would take. “I didn’t know exactly which role would be the best fit,” she admits. “But I was open to learning, and I knew ICON offered opportunities to move across functions.”

Staying Persistent Through Setbacks

Daniela’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. She applied for multiple roles before being successful. “I didn’t even get the chance to interview for some positions,” she says. “It was difficult; there’s a lot of competition, and I had to keep going.”

What kept her motivated was a clear goal: to work in a role focused on patients. “I’ve always been someone who fights for the patient,” she says. “I want what’s best for them. That’s what drives me.”

Her breakthrough came with the support of an ICON Recruiter, Diego Tonini, who saw her potential beyond job titles or levels. “He said, ‘We will focus on your skills and knowledge and how it can fit into a role at ICON’. That made all the difference.”

Moving Closer to the Patient

Now, as she transitions into Drug Safety, she has the connection she wanted to the patients. “My new role is completely patient focused,” she says. “I assess whether adverse events are related to the investigational product,” she explains. “It is challenging, but it is also rewarding because I am directly involved in protecting participants.”

For Daniela, this isn’t just a career move. It’s the realisation of a goal she set when she first joined ICON. “I knew I wanted to work in medical affairs,” she says. “I enjoy study start-up, but this is where I want to be.”

Collaboration That Makes a Difference

One of the things Daniela values most about ICON is the collaborative culture. “There’s so much teamwork between departments and geographies,” she says. “You’re never working in isolation.” Even in her early days in study start up, she worked closely with legal, finance, operations and site teams across the US. Now, in her new role, collaboration remains central. “Whether it’s with clinical teams, regulatory experts or external partners, everyone works together toward the same goal.”

She also appreciates the flexibility ICON offers. “Sometimes I work from home, and yet I still feel connected,” she says. “We have regular calls, team meetings and virtual check ins. I never feel isolated.”

To stay engaged, she’s developed her own routine. “I keep my camera on, I speak up in meetings, and I treat it like I’m in the office. It helps me stay part of the team.”

Support, Growth, and Belonging

Daniela credits much of her success to the people around her. “Having a leader who believed in me made a huge difference,” she says. “My leader looked at my potential rather than my current role. That kind of support is rare, and I’m grateful for it.”

For anyone thinking of joining ICON, her advice is simple: “Be open, be persistent and know what you want. If you’re looking to grow, ICON will support you. But you have to take the first step.”

And if you face rejection? “Don’t give up. I applied to many roles and didn’t get them. But I kept going. And eventually, the right opportunity came.”

Life Outside of Work

One of Daniela’s greatest passions in life is traveling. She thrives on discovering new places, meeting fascinating people, and immersing herself in diverse cultures.

Her dream is nothing short of global: she wants to visit every corner of the world. A special goal of hers? To experience every single Disney park.

So far, she’s crossed three off her list: the parks in Anaheim, Orlando, and Tokyo as seen in the images below. She’s already brimming with excitement for the ones still to come.

Why ICON? Purpose, People, and Progress

Looking back, Daniela’s journey has come full circle. Early in her career, she worked at a clinical research site where the monitors were from ICON. “They were amazing,” she recalls. “Professional, supportive, always focused on the patient.”

Now, she’s proud to be part of that same team. “I’m no longer on the other side of the monitor visit - I’m part of ICON. And I’m working in a role that aligns with my values.”

For Daniela, that alignment is everything. “This isn’t just a job,” she says. “It’s a career with purpose. Every day, I’m contributing to something bigger: better treatments, safer medicines, improved patient outcomes.”

And that, she says, is what makes ICON different. “We talk about patients in every meeting, every decision, every project. It’s not just a value - it’s real. And that’s why I’m still here, and why I’m excited for what comes next.”
