Izabella's Journey Back to ICON

Sometimes the best way to recognise what you have is to experience life without it. For Izabella Grimaldi, a Clinical Research Associate II based in Brazil, that realisation came after seven months working outside ICON. What she discovered during that time wasn't just what other organisations could offer, but what made ICON different.

From leadership that genuinely invests in people to a culture built on collaboration and excellence, Izabella's journey away ultimately led her back home. We sat down with her to discuss why she returned, what she learned along the way, and what makes ICON the place where she wants to build her career.

Why did you choose ICON the first time, and what were you hoping to learn or achieve then?

Since I started working in clinical research, I've always seen ICON as a dream company and a place where I wanted to build my career. The company's reputation for excellence and its global reach in advancing healthcare made it stand out from the beginning. I hoped to grow alongside the organisation, contribute to impactful work that genuinely improves patients' lives, and continuously develop my monitoring skills whilst being part of a team that was pushing boundaries in clinical research.

What made you to decide to come back to ICON?

During my previous time at ICON, I had brilliant opportunities to grow, learn, and mentor other CRAs. I also had strong, supportive leadership who believed in me, provided constructive feedback, and recognised my work in meaningful ways. That level of investment in people's development is how the leaders I've had interact with their teams every single day.

When I reflected on where I wanted to take my career long-term, ICON kept coming back to mind. These qualities aren't easy to find elsewhere, and once you've experienced them, you realise how rare and valuable they are.

What did working outside ICON help you learn about yourself or your role as a CRA?

Working outside ICON showed me that my professional profile truly aligns with ICON's culture and way of working. It gave me the chance to step back and see what I valued most in my career. The experience reinforced how much the company invests in people, systems, and a supportive environment that enables CRAs to do their best work. I also learned the importance of efficient and streamlined processes to ensure high-quality work and timely delivery, something I experienced more strongly at ICON.

As a CRA, I gained a deeper understanding of what clients look for when partnering with a CRO and what we can do day-to-day to strengthen their confidence in our work. Ultimately, it confirmed what I already suspected: that ICON's approach to clinical research is something special.

After working elsewhere, what were you looking for when you returned?

There's a real sense of coming home to a place where I know I can make a difference. I'm looking forward to contributing even more to my team by delivering high-quality monitoring visits, meeting timelines, and helping strengthen communication with sponsors so they trust our work as one unified team. I also hope to continue mentoring other CRAs and receiving opportunities to work on a variety of visits and study types.

The diversity of experience available at ICON is something I've always appreciated, and I'm excited to continue expanding my expertise across different therapeutic areas and trial phases.

How do you use what you learned outside ICON in your role today?

I learned what sponsors value most when selecting CROs, and those insights have been invaluable. It's not just about delivering on contracted milestones. It's about being a true partner, anticipating needs, and demonstrating that their study is in expert hands. I share these insights with my team so we can build confidence in the quality of our work from every interaction. When you understand what keeps sponsors awake at night and how they measure success, you can tailor your approach to support them better.

How has your way of monitoring sites changed since you returned?

I've always focused on quality and patient safety, and that remains unchanged. However, I now place even greater emphasis on building strong relationships with sites and sponsors. Clinical trials are complex endeavours, and the human connections we create can make an enormous difference to how smoothly things run. When site staff trust you and feel supported, when sponsors see you as an extension of their team, it transforms the dynamic. Issues get resolved more quickly, communication flows more naturally, and everyone works towards the same goal with greater alignment.

What do you value most about working at ICON now?

Definitely the leadership and the culture.

Having worked in different CROs and on the sponsor side, I can confidently say that I've never experienced leadership as strong and supportive as what we have at ICON. Here, leaders truly support you, understand you, and give you space and opportunities to grow, not only in technical skills but also in soft skills and in becoming a leader in your own way. They're invested in your success because they genuinely care about developing people.

ICON is a place where people are respected for who they are, where your voice is heard, and where you're genuinely valued. That inclusivity isn't just a policy, it's something you feel in everyday interactions with colleagues across the globe.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about returning to ICON?

Don't wait any longer. ICON is a brilliant company that truly cares about its impact on the industry and the patients we ultimately serve. It's an organisation that is always evolving, investing in new technologies, and improving processes, which means it allows us to grow together with it.

If you care about quality, inclusion, teamwork, and delivering excellence, ICON is the place to be. Sometimes you need to step away to truly appreciate what you had. If ICON is calling you back, trust that instinct.
