Shaping the Future of Patient Safety: A Conversation with Hassan Aljobori

Shaping the Future of Patient Safety

At ICON, patient safety is the foundation of everything we do. Hassan Aljobori, Director of Pharmacovigilance, shares his journey through nine years of growth at ICON, the principles that drive excellence in pharmacovigilance, and why now is an exciting time to join this field.

From Pharmacy to Pharmacovigilance

For Hassan, the path to pharmacovigilance was a natural extension of his passion as a trained pharmacist and his MSc in Drug Toxicology and Safety Pharmacology. “I’ve always been passionate about patient safety, which I think naturally led me to a career in pharmacovigilance,” he explains. What drew him to ICON specifically was the organisation’s reputation as a leader in the CRO space, supporting hundreds of clinical trials and post-marketing programs across diverse therapeutic areas globally.

But it wasn’t just ICON’s impressive portfolio that attracted him. “The career progression opportunities I’d heard about from colleagues, how ICON supports its employees, really appealed to me. I wanted to pursue my pharmacovigilance career with ICON, and here I am.”

Growth Through Challenge

Over nearly a decade at ICON, Hassan has progressed through various positions within pharmacovigilance. When asked which role had the greatest impact on his development, he reflects: “If I had to choose one, it would probably be my time as a senior manager. That role introduced me to a wide range of challenges, some really difficult ones, but it had a profound influence on my professional development.”

“The amount of things I learnt during that period probably equates to ten years somewhere else.”

What made the difference? Global exposure at a different level. Hassan’s adaptability has been key to his success, particularly when navigating different time zones and regional working styles. “I’m quite adaptable, and that’s something I’m very proud of,” he notes.

What Sets ICON’s Pharmacovigilance Apart

Patient safety is central to every decision at ICON PV, but what truly distinguishes the organisation is its commitment to innovation. “Our focus on innovation, maintaining high standards of quality, and ensuring compliance in a very complex regulatory environment... these aspects, especially the innovation piece and patient safety, set us apart,” Hassan explains.

In an industry where regulations are constantly evolving and technology is advancing rapidly, particularly with the implementation of AI in pharmacovigilance, ICON remains agile. “ICON stays ahead by continuously updating our processes to meet evolving regulatory complexities. We’re driven by innovation, underpinned by technology, to ensure both patients and clients are well supported in this environment.”

The Non-Negotiables: Quality, Compliance, and Excellence

When it comes to delivering consistent quality and operational excellence, Hassan identifies several critical factors:

Regulatory expertise combined with operational leadership – “Balancing both is a privilege that allows me to make well-informed decisions. Having exposure to both worlds enables me to make the most appropriate decisions, always with patient safety as the utmost priority.”

Calm leadership – “To be successful in a complex pharmacovigilance environment, you have to provide calm leadership to your team. We have many inspections and audits ongoing, and delivering the right message requires a calm approach for the team to deliver their work appropriately and ensure compliance.”

Clear communication and transparency – Hassan emphasises that transparency is key, along with a constant focus on compliance and quality.

Working as One Team

Pharmacovigilance doesn’t operate in isolation at ICON. Hassan collaborates with multiple teams across functions, both within and outside the organisation. “The ultimate goal is to deliver safe medicines and devices to patients and continuously monitor their impact in a post-marketing environment,” he says.

What makes this collaboration successful? “Understanding each team’s roles and responsibilities, and working as one team towards the same goal. When everyone believes in that shared goal, it creates an effective teamwork environment.”

Looking to the Future: Innovation and Transformation

What excites Hassan most about the future of pharmacovigilance? The rapid integration of automation and AI. “One of the most exciting aspects of my position is driving innovation within the pharmacovigilance business. I’m eager to witness the transformative impact of these technologies on operations and how the field will adapt.”

As part of the leadership team driving this innovation, Hassan is optimistic: “I really look forward to being part of this journey. Pharmacovigilance will be in a better place in a few years’ time. Innovation and technology will lead to standardisation, which is something that’s currently missing.”

Advice for Aspiring Pharmacovigilance Professionals

What does it take to succeed in pharmacovigilance at ICON? Hassan highlights several important qualities: “Transparency, authenticity, networking, and willingness to learn from colleagues at all levels, even those above or below you, have been instrumental in my professional development.”

He also stresses the importance of continuous development: “Maintaining a commitment to learning new skills is crucial. Having the right skills is important, but knowing what to do with them is just as key.”

Why Join ICON’s Pharmacovigilance Team?

Hassan’s message to those considering a career in pharmacovigilance at ICON is unequivocal: “Go for it. Absolutely go for it.”

“ICON offers a highly rewarding environment with opportunities to contribute to meaningful projects. The team here is fantastic to work with across all functions. You’ll have great challenges, but you’ll also have great fun. So join us.”

If you’re passionate about patient safety and want to work in an environment where innovation meets real impact, ICON could be your next move.
