Lydia's Journey Back to ICON
Career paths are rarely straightforward, especially in the fast moving world of clinical research. For many professionals, gaining experience across organisations can provide valuable perspective. For some, that experience ultimately leads them back to a company where they know they can grow, contribute, and make a meaningful impact.
That was the case for Lydia Zouzoula, Senior Clinical Research Associate based in Athens, Greece. After initially joining ICON in 2022, Lydia stepped away in 2025 to broaden her experience in clinical operations before returning in 2026. Her story highlights what it's like to work in an FSP role, the value of continuous professional development, and why ICON remains a place where clinical research professionals choose to build long term careers.Tell us about your current role and what you do at ICON
As a Senior Clinical Research Associate in a sponsor dedicated (FSP) role, I oversee the operational delivery of clinical trials at the site level, ensuring that timelines, quality standards, and patient safety remain at the forefront. My typical week includes site monitoring, cross functional collaboration with study teams, risk mitigation planning, and supporting sites to maintain strong protocol compliance.
What I enjoy most is being directly connected to patients’ journeys. Every step we take helps bring potential new treatments closer to those who need them.
What is it like working in a sponsor dedicated (FSP) role at ICON?
Working in an FSP role offers the best of both worlds: the stability and development culture of ICON combined with the close collaboration and scientific focus of the sponsor. This model allows me to build deep relationships with sponsor teams while still benefiting from ICON’s global expertise, operational excellence, and strong support network.
What influenced your decision to return to ICON?
Returning to ICON was a natural choice. I came back because of ICON’s reputation for high quality delivery, supportive leadership, and genuine commitment to employee growth. I wanted to be part of an organisation where my career progression, wellbeing, and professional development would be taken seriously.
What sets ICON apart as a place to build a clinical research career?
ICON stands out for its collaborative culture, clear operational structures, and strong investment in continuous learning. The company fosters an environment where people feel trusted, valued, and encouraged to thrive. Being surrounded by knowledgeable colleagues and having access to extensive resources makes a meaningful difference in my daily work.
What aspects of ICON’s culture stand out to you?
ICON combines scientific rigour with a people first mindset. There is a genuine willingness to help, share knowledge, and support one another. Even in a sponsor embedded role, ICON’s sense of community is always present.
What support and development opportunities have helped you succeed?
ICON offers strong operational frameworks, clear guidance, and accessible management teams who are always ready to support. The training modules, mentoring opportunities, training academies and hands on guidance from experienced colleagues have all been instrumental in helping me grow in my role.
The Clinical Trial Manager training academies in particular have supported my professional development and prepared me for future progression.
How do you see your future at ICON?
I see ICON as a place where I can continue expanding my responsibilities, deepen my therapeutic and operational expertise, and progress into broader leadership roles as a Clinical Trial Manager. ICON’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement gives me confidence that my career path will remain both meaningful and dynamic.
