Career Journey into Clinical Research

Verónica Monserrat Contreras Zuñiga's path into clinical data was not a straight line. It started in quality control, moved through coordination roles, took a detour outside ICON, and eventually circled back to where she felt she belonged.

As a Senior Clinical Data Coordinator, Verónica now brings a broader perspective, sharper skills, and a clear sense of what she wants from her career. We sat down with her to hear the full story.

Building a Foundation in Quality

Verónica's career began in quality-focused roles, where she developed a feel for compliance, data accuracy, and the detail-oriented mindset that clinical research demands.

"I gained a strong foundation in compliance, data accuracy, and process-driven work. Over time, my exposure to clinical trials and cross-functional teams sparked my interest in the data and operational side of clinical research." When the opportunity came to move into clinical data and operations, she was ready. The skills translated more directly than she expected.

"Attention to detail, critical thinking, and a strong understanding of quality standards are skills that translate very well into clinical data and operations. What truly helped me was my willingness to learn, take on new challenges, and actively seek opportunities where I could expand my technical knowledge."

Arriving at ICON

Verónica first joined ICON in 2022 as a Clinical Data Coordinator. Her work centred on data cleaning, query management, EDC systems, and close collaboration with cross-functional teams.

"It was a very hands-on role that allowed me to build a solid understanding of clinical data processes within a global CRO environment."

The experience extended well beyond the technical. She left her first stint at ICON with a sharper professional identity. "I learned the importance of collaboration, effective communication, and accountability. ICON helped me develop a professional mindset focused on continuous improvement and ownership of my work."

Stepping Away to Grow

After a period at ICON, Verónica chose to explore an opportunity elsewhere. The motivation was clear-eyed: she wanted to push herself further and test what she was capable of in a different setting.

"I felt ready to challenge myself further and gain additional experience that would help me grow both technically and professionally."

The time away proved genuinely formative. She gained hands-on experience in database testing, built a system from scratch, successfully archived two databases, and deepened her stakeholder communication skills through regular sponsor engagement.

"It became a key part of my daily responsibilities, and it significantly strengthened my confidence in working with stakeholders at that level."

The Decision to Return

After almost three years, Verónica returned to ICON as a Senior Clinical Data Coordinator. The decision was not complicated.

"Returning to ICON truly felt like coming back home. I value ICON's culture, structure, and opportunities for growth, and I knew this was the right place to apply everything I had learned while continuing to develop professionally." Her new role reflects how much has changed. Greater seniority, more complex challenges, and stronger expectations came with the title.

"I now have more ownership and more opportunities to demonstrate the experience I have acquired. The role allows me to apply new knowledge, propose process improvements, and actively contribute to efficiency and quality across studies."

A Broader Perspective

Stepping outside ICON and returning did something harder to quantify than adding technical skills. It gave Verónica a clearer sense of how she works best.

"My experience outside ICON has given me a broader perspective and more confidence in my abilities. I approach my work with a stronger sense of ownership, improved communication skills, and a more solution-oriented mindset."

Senior Clinical Data Coordinator: What's Different Now

Veronica's current role comes with greater seniority, increased responsibilities, and more complex challenges. She now has more ownership, higher expectations, and more opportunities to demonstrate the experience she has acquired. The role allows me her apply new knowledge, propose process improvements, and actively contribute to efficiency and quality across studies.

Advice for Those Starting Out

For anyone considering a career in clinical data, Verónica's message is straightforward.

"Stay curious, be proactive, and never underestimate the value of a strong foundation in quality and compliance. Clinical data is a field where attention to detail, communication, and continuous learning are essential. Being open to challenges, asking questions, and building confidence over time will make a big difference in long-term growth."
