The Vice President, Scientific Affairs will provide organizational leadership for Scientific Affairs with ICON Central and Specialty Labs. This individual will lead a multi-functional Scientific Affairs team which is responsible for driving the continued expansion of the Specialty Biomarker Testing business and capabilities at ICON. The SA team provides technical consultation regarding biomarker testing strategies and methods to ICON’s pharma and biotech customers, develops and validates custom specialty biomarker assays for clinical trial testing and provides technical services and support to internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Establish dialogue regarding current and future assay and platform requirements with biomarker strategy leads within key accounts. Coordinate and develop scientific relationships between research sponsors and ICON subject-matter experts
Raise the scientific profile of ICON Labs within the drug development community via conference presentations, webinars and white papers
Drive profitability and growth of the business by supporting our commercial teams in the development and expansion of sponsor relationships and the adoption of biomarker testing
Manage the Strategic Roadmap of specialty biomarker testing capabilities to support all phases of clinical drug development with a special focus on the following areas: Flow Cytometry, IHC, PCR, NGS and Cytokine and Soluble Biomarkers.
Provide regulatory guidance, services and support to drug sponsors and clinical programs requiring companion diagnostic assays or other complex biomarker testing.
Identify optimal systems, processes and people required for the delivery of a high quality and comprehensive specialty biomarker testing portfolio
Design/implement strategies for continuous process improvement and metrics for assessing efficient delivery of specialty biomarker testing services across the ICON Lab Network
Preferred background
The ideal candidate for the Vice President of Scientific Affairs will possess an exemplary background of academic and professional achievements in the scientific field. A doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent) in a relevant scientific discipline is required, complemented by an outstanding record of research publications and contributions to the scientific community. The candidate will have accumulated a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in scientific leadership roles, including strategic planning and program management. Previous experience in a senior executive position, overseeing scientific affairs within a reputable organization, will be highly advantageous.
The candidate should demonstrate a deep understanding of diverse scientific disciplines and possess the ability to identify emerging trends and opportunities in research and development. Additionally, a proven track record of successfully securing research grants, partnerships, and collaborations with academic institutions, government agencies, and industry leaders is essential to advance our scientific mission.
As the VP of Scientific Affairs, the individual must be an influential communicator and collaborator, adept at fostering strong relationships with stakeholders across various departments and external partners. Leadership and mentoring skills are paramount, as they will be responsible for nurturing and inspiring a talented team of researchers and scientists.
Furthermore, the candidate should possess a strategic vision for translating scientific breakthroughs into real-world applications and commercial opportunities. Their passion for scientific advancement should be matched by an astute business acumen, driving innovative strategies to fuel growth and success within the organization.
Logistically, the VP Scientific Affairs is based in the US in close proximity to Blue Bell, PA, Portland, OR, Long Island NY, Raleigh, NC, Nashville, TN, or Cambridge, MA, and is able to travel up to 50%, domestically and internationally.
