Emmet's Internship Experience
Inside Story: Emmet's Internship at ICON
Internships offer an invaluable experience and are incredible opportunities for learning and growth, especially for those looking to gain experience in industry. They provide a real-world experience that complements academic learning.
We were delighted to hear from Emmet Bowers, as he reflects on his experience interning in the Dublin labs at ICON Plc.
Valuable Experience Beyond the Classroom
Academic lectures and notes have their value, but my time at ICON Plc provided me with hands-on experience that was unparalleled. Being on the Gen lab floor, I acquired a plethora of skills and deepened my knowledge in ways I could never have imagined.
I am grateful to have been surrounded by the best medical technologists, lab aids and mangers, who have helped me learn and placed a great emphasis on my development in an inclusive and diverse way.
The practical understanding I gained is something I could never have acquired from books alone.
Mentorship and Teamwork
One of the most memorable aspects of my internship was the people I worked with. Surrounded by leading medical technologists, lab aides, and managers, every day was a lesson.
The mentorship I received was another highlight. Each mentor, with their unique expertise and knowledge, played an instrumental role in my learning. Their willingness to answer my every query and even encourage me to ask more questions was refreshing and greatly boosted my confidence.
Skills Development and Industry Exposure
My time at ICON Plc was not just about learning; it was about developing a range of skills, both individual and as part of a team.
I got hands-on experience with LIMS and STARLIMS, giving me a competitive edge in a highly professional industry. Moreover, shadowing numerous professionals and observing the use of cutting-edge equipment provided me with an authentic insight into the Clinical Research industry.
Looking Ahead
As I transition from my internship and look towards obtaining my add on Hons Bachelors, I do so with great memories and gratitude for the experience. The lessons I've learned, the skills I've acquired, and the relationships I've formed at ICON Plc will remain with me.
To anyone considering an internship, I cannot emphasize enough the value of such an experience.
