What is SAS Programming?

A statistical software suite called SAS for data management was established by the SAS Institute between 1966 and 1976 for the purposes of advanced analytics, multivariate analysis, business intelligence, forensic analysis, and predictive analytics.

What is SAS Programming used for?

SAS, short for statistical analysis system, is a specialised statistical software package used by IT experts for corporate intelligence, advanced analytics, data management, and predictive analytics.

What does a SAS Programmer do?

An individual who gathers and analyses data for organisations is known as a SAS programmer. Having learned SAS programming, professionals are able to mine, modify, manage, retrieve, and combine data from many sources.

What do SAS Programmers do at ICON?

Our statistical programmers at ICON plc are in charge of creating and coding the common macros and programmes that analyse clinical trial data.

This is vital since the program examines datasets, tables, figures (or graphs), listings (TFLs), and statistical reports with a focus on CDISC ADaM programming. The unit offers time and technical assistance to SAS users as a support. Additionally, it is in charge of guaranteeing the accuracy of all research and program-level outputs. Thus, team members will closely collaborate with Data Management to improve the quality of the data and handle queries.

Mahesh talks about his time in SAS with ICON

“I joined ICON as SAS Lead I in Bio-Statistics and Programming just over a year ago, in September 2013. Although I’ve only been with ICON for a relatively short time I’ve learnt a lot and wanted to share my experience. The opportunity to work for the company is one that I really cherish and both personally and professionally it has been very advantageous.

Career development at ICON

When I ask for new opportunities or responsibilities the level of support is remarkable. Due to this, I have been able to achieve new professional goals and I’m always given time to share my thoughts and opinions. On a personal level, I strongly believe in my own responsibility to strive for what I want in my career and the feedback provided for me has allowed me to really expand my career and make my way up the career ladder.

I’ve been impressed by the way that ICON consistently allows team members at different levels to grow. The support internally means that there are always people around you who have experienced similar challenges with clients and project groups – allowing you to draw on their experience and knowledge. This internal network is a crucial support mechanism which allows me to always bring a fresh perspective to my clients and projects.

Working together to solve problems

The atmosphere created by ICON means that my co-workers are constantly working together to solve problems on a day-to-day basis. This team support mechanism cannot be understated – it’s at the very heart of everything we do. Department, Projects and Functions operate as a team which provides support and assistance whenever needed. As a senior team member, one of the things I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity to develop my staff and guide them through their progress.

We have a dedicated training team that works to educate team members and develop their skills in all aspects of the clinical domain. When you start with the company you receive excellent training in SAS programming as well as domain knowledge and there’s a real emphasis on continuous learning. The standard of this training means that new team members can really start working to their full capabilities as quickly as possible, often exceeding expectations.

A strong support network

The management is consistently supportive, particularly my director. In meetings, he always takes my feedback on board and encourages me to build on my skill set. This supportive atmosphere means that everyone is provided with the opportunity to advance as far and as fast as they are able to. As a team, we also enjoy socialising together, especially in the ICON-SAS Bonkers sports team and this adds to the friendly atmosphere!

ICON has already shown itself as a wonderful place to work and to advance the skills I need. It encourages me to be a better team member every day - to support my team and all work together to create and deliver our projects.
