Meet Savannah Muccia, Clinical Data Science Lead at ICON
From Mystery Novels to Medical Breakthroughs
For Savannah Muccia, problem-solving is more than just part of the job. Whether she is reviewing clinical trial data or reading a suspense-filled mystery novel at home, she enjoys digging into the details and uncovering the bigger picture.
As a Clinical Data Science Lead at ICON, Savannah plays a key role in helping clinical trial teams make confident, data-driven decisions that support the development of new treatments for patients. Six years into her career at ICON, she reflects on the experiences, mentorship, and flexibility that have shaped her journey so far.Building a Career in Clinical Data Science
Savannah joined ICON six years ago through the organisation’s Data Management Academy, an experience she credits with helping her build both technical skills and confidence early in her career.
“Having a mentor in my corner made a huge difference and it’s a big reason I’ve become the employee I am today,” she explains. Now, Savannah enjoys mentoring others and helping new colleagues find their footing in the same way her mentor supported her. Alongside mentoring, she has also contributed to two subject matter expert teams, which has allowed her to continue expanding her knowledge and experience across the business. Her advice for anyone considering a similar career path is simple: “Find people you can learn from, ask questions, and keep saying yes to growth opportunities.”What Does a Clinical Data Science Lead Do?
For those unfamiliar with clinical research, Savannah describes her role in straightforward terms:
“My job is to help make sure the clinical trial data we collect is accurate, consistent, and ready to tell the story it’s meant to tell.” Working closely with cross-functional teams, Savannah supports everything from electronic data capture (EDC) build and design through to medical review and database lock readiness. Her role involves reviewing incoming data, identifying trends, resolving inconsistencies, and helping study teams address issues early so decisions can be made with confidence. A typical day includes collaborating with colleagues across clinical operations, programming, and medical teams, alongside reviewing data queries and solving complex challenges. It is the investigative side of the role that Savannah enjoys most. “The detective work is definitely a theme for me,” she says. “I love figuring out the ‘why’ behind the data.”Supporting Sponsor Teams Through Long-Term Partnerships
As part of a sponsor-embedded team, Savannah works closely with sponsor colleagues on a day-to-day basis, becoming fully integrated into the wider study team.
One project in particular stands out as a career highlight. Savannah has supported an immunology study since 2020 that achieved multiple regulatory milestones, including approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for both IV induction with SC maintenance and later a fully SC induction regimen. “Seeing that progress after being there from the start was incredibly rewarding and a great reminder that the details really do matter.” For Savannah, moments like these reinforce the real-world impact of clinical data science and the role it plays in helping bring new treatment options to patients.Flexibility That Supports Career Growth
Remote working flexibility has been another important part of Savannah’s experience at ICON. Based remotely in the US, she values the ability to structure her day in a way that supports both productivity and family life.
“Flexibility is one of the biggest reasons I’ve been able to grow in my role at ICON,” she says. With a one-year-old daughter at home, Savannah balances focused work time, collaboration with global teams, and family responsibilities throughout the day. She credits supportive leadership and a culture of trust for helping her maintain a healthy work-life balance while continuing to grow professionally.A Culture Built on Support and Collaboration
When asked what makes ICON a place where people choose to stay and build their careers, Savannah points to the collaborative culture within her team.
“There’s a real team mentality, and it’s normal to ask questions, lean on each other, and share what you’ve learned.” She also values the opportunities to continue learning, take on new challenges, and broaden her skillset over time. Combined with meaningful work and flexible working arrangements, Savannah says it creates an environment where people can thrive long term.Life Outside of Work
Outside of clinical research, Savannah spends most of her time with her husband and young daughter, who she jokingly describes as “the tiny CEO who runs our household”.
When she gets a quiet moment to herself, she enjoys unwinding with mystery novels and suspense-filled page-turners. Apparently, even her downtime includes a little detective work.I Can Do Hard Things
Savannah’s personal mantra is inspired by a familiar phrase many parents may recognise:
“I can do hard things.” It is a mindset that reflects both her personal and professional approach. Whether navigating complex clinical trials, mentoring colleagues, or balancing work and family life, Savannah focuses on growth, resilience, and the bigger picture. “On a challenging day, what motivates me most is remembering that our work helps generate data that can lead to real options for patients.”
