Director – Global Travel
 
Location: Dublin
 
ICON plc, a leading Contract Research Organisation, employing approximately 13,500 employees across 97 offices in 38 countries, seeks an experienced and highly motivated Director of Global Travel to join its Travel Department at its Leopardstown Global HQ.
  
Based in our global HQ, this is a fantastic opportunity to join one of Ireland’s leading Plc’s and top 5 global CRO.
 
The Role
As Global Travel Director you will manage the delivery of internal Global Travel Program for approximately 4,000 regularly traveling staff and lead in the development, implementation, and execution of travel-related supplier management strategies to optimize ICON’s travel program cost, quality and service levels.
 
You will also manage existing travel-related programs, policies and procedures, supplier negotiations/relations, and provide travel reporting and analysis. You will also lead key travel initiatives to support the ongoing transformation and continuous improvement by conducting reviews of travel program including processes and travel management system/software.
 
Role responsibilities include:
  • Leads the operational and management activities of the travel department and serves as the SME for all travel-related activities.
  • Leadership role in assessing travel processes, tools, and policies to strengthen the Travel Program and enhance the travel experience.
  • Serves as project manager for travel management initiatives and rollouts. Coordinates cross-functionally to collect data, obtain feedback and drive project timelines. Leads development of deliverables.
  • Manage selection, implementation and termination of travel supplier relationships (agency, online booking tool, air, car, and hotel).
  • Oversight of travel management companies (TMC’s) including all operational issues, SLA’s, management reporting systems and adherence to policy.
  • Evaluate, recommend and implement new technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the travel process. Benchmark other firms.
  • Leverages peer and industry best practices and benchmarks to measure internal performance and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Primary contact for the internal travel user community in fielding general travel related questions, education/guidance on travel policy and procedures, investigate and resolve concerns and problems with travel services providers.
  • Engage with senior management to service their departments' needs, minimise non-compliance and optimise travel experience.
  • Monitor travel related policy compliance and recommend strategies to improve compliance.
  • Benchmark, analyse, monitor and report on travel expenditures.
  • Travel (approximately 15%) domestic and/or international. 
  • Management of in-house travel team members
  • Management of implant staff/teams from TMC’s (Travel Management Companies)
Experience & Knowledge Requirements:
  • Strong leadership, communication and negotiation skills and ability to build trust across the organization.
  • Proven ability to manage significant projects including system implementation.
  • Detail oriented, critical thinking, problem solving skills and ability.
  • Capable of assessing current state and exploring innovative ways to drive cost down and maintain or increase value.
  • Articulate clear instructions to internal customers and team members of all levels.
  • Adaptable and flexible communication styles to effectively transfer key information.
  • Able to organise work to meet deadlines and support team goals.
  • Identify issues and take a proactive approach to dealing with them.
  • Experience managing global travel program and multinational company experience.
  • Experience with Concur and corporate card programs. 
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred)
