My functional manager and mentors have been phenomenal helping me adjust to the clinical research industry. The Veterans Leadership Transition Program (VLTP) that ICON developed has made my transition after 20 years in the United States Marine Corps into corporate life an easy and fun process. This terrific group of veterans have been instrumental in completing my first year. The comradery and acceptance has made me feel right at home, The VLTP has helped me capitalize on my strengths and and develop any gaps in my knowledge.

Being in the military helped prepare me for my civilian career at ICON in many ways. I have a built in a sense of urgency which is important for clinical research because we have hard deadlines for almost everything. The military also prepared me with medical experience giving me many of the skills I need for the Medical Research Associate role. Also, my communication skills and level headedness from my military experience make high stress assessment rounds here easier and flow smoother. Not everything goes completely to plan in any kind of research and the Army has taught me to stay calm in those circumstances and that always makes it easier to think clearly and fix the situation at hand.

I enlisted in the military to see the world, so I volunteered for everything, even for deployments. Like clinical trials, deployments change in a moment’s notice. Through this, I gained a skill of flexibility to use with my role as a Project Manager and learned to work globally before it was popular.

After leaving the military I was excited to find another job where the work I would be doing would actually make a difference. It is also great to work for a company that understands what my previous time in the military brings to the table as an Associate Project Manager to start with and now a Project Manager.

The past few years while serving on active duty with the Air Force, I basically lived out of my suitcase because I was never home. I wanted a position in the civilian world that would provide a better work life balance and flexibility in my schedule. At ICON the transition from the military to the civilian world made me a bit nervous, but the Veteran Leadership Transition Program (VLTP) has made this transition easy. The amount of support and mentoring that I have received through the VLTP has been fantastic.

The 2 most important things to service members are our people and mission priorities. Whether you served aboard a ship or on the ground, you must take care of your troops personally and professionally to ensure they can remain on task to complete the mission.
