From Infantry Soldier to ICON Associate Project Manager: Charlie's Story

Posting date: 01/08/2024
Author: Inside ICON

ICON is proud to introduce Charlie Kouri, a dedicated veteran who has recently joined our team as an Associate Project Manager through the Veteran Leadership Transition Program (VLTP). Charlie brings over 20 years of service in the Army, including roles as an Infantry Soldier and Career Counselor, to his new position.

Learn about Charlie's military experiences, his transition to the civilian workforce, and how he's applying his unique skillset at ICON.

A Calling to Serve

The events of 9/11 deeply impacted Charlie's decision to join the military. Witnessing the tragedy unfold solidified his desire to serve his country. Additionally, he felt a strong urge to take control of his future and embarked on a rewarding military career.

Memorable Milestones

Charlie's service was marked by several significant experiences. He met his spouse, with whom he's shared over 18 years of marriage, forged lasting friendships, positively influenced others' careers, and even jumped from airplanes at night! He also participated in three deployments to Iraq and traveled extensively around the globe.

Transitioning with Focus

While Charlie had a general plan for his transition, he acknowledges the limitations of military-provided resources in fully preparing veterans for the civilian job search. He highlights the significant time, effort, and dedication required, which can be a surprise to transitioning veterans. However, Charlie proactively tackled his transition by pursuing project management certifications and actively networking. He emphasizes the importance of translating military skills into civilian language during the job search process.

Supportive Environment

Charlie has experienced a smooth cultural transition at ICON. The company's patient, understanding, and welcoming environment has facilitated his adaptation to the civilian workplace. His colleagues and employers have been supportive, appreciating his military service and offering guidance as he navigates his new career path.

Empowering Resources

Veteran organizations, mentorship programs, and family support proved invaluable during Charlie's transition. He specifically mentions Vets2Pm as a resource that significantly aided his transition process. While acknowledging the availability of resources, Charlie emphasizes the need for improved guidance on translating military experience into civilian applications. He commends the ICON VLTP program for recognizing the learning curve veterans face and taking a chance on their unique skillsets.

Advice for Fellow Veterans

Charlie has valuable advice for transitioning veterans:

  • Utilize Tuition Assistance: Maximize your military benefits by completing relevant certifications before leaving service.
  • Seek Internship Opportunities: Pursue paid internships or apprenticeships with reputable companies offering veteran programs. Start this process as early as possible
  • Embrace New Terminology: Recognize that civilian and military workplaces have different vocabularies. Translate your skills and experiences into the language used by potential employers.

Looking Forward

Charlie emphasizes that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to transitioning from the military. His experiences, both positive and negative, have prepared him for his current role at ICON, and he expresses his satisfaction with his career path.

Addressing a Shared Misconception

While Charlie hasn't personally encountered misconceptions, it's important to acknowledge a common one: that veterans lack the skills and experience needed for civilian careers. The reality is, veterans possess valuable transferable skills and experience directly applicable to a wide range of civilian jobs. Charlie's story exemplifies the valuable contributions veterans can make to the civilian workforce. ICON remains committed to supporting veterans through programs like the VLTP, helping them thrive in their new careers.
