Position Description:
The Histology Technologist is responsible for performing technical histopathology techniques, immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing, CLIA/CAP certified Clinical Laboratory. The duties of the Histology Technologist will include, but are not limited to specimen processing, sectioning, embedding, staining, testing, reporting testing results, storage of clinical specimens, histopathology lab instrument maintenance, assisting with equipment/temperature monitoring and Histopathology Laboratory supply replenishment. The HTL will receive, accession, store, and track the location of solid tumor clinical specimens (tissue blocks/slides). Accuracy and attention to detail is critical to ensure that sample and testing data are entered into the laboratory data base without introducing errors. The Clinical Laboratory is a highly stringent and regulated environment with documented processes which must be followed throughout all phases of specimen management, testing, reporting, and resolution of non- conformities. Participation in required continuing education is mandatory as is compliance with all MolecularMD/ICON policies and external regulatory agency training.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform technical histology and IHC laboratory activities in the Histology Reference Laboratory. Support Histopathology Laboratory compliance with all quality standards, policies, and Quality Control (QC) and regulatory guidelines. The Histology Technologist reports to the Director, Laboratory Operations.
The Histology Technologist will meet high complexity laboratory testing personnel responsibilities and qualifications per 42 CFR 493.1495.
- Provide routine histology functions including but not limited to processing, embedding, sectioning, H&E staining, IHC staining, special staining, and instrument/reagent QC/maintenance
- Regularly perform and report patient samples results using LIS/LIMS
- Adhere to quality standards, turnaround times, and customer deliverables
- Perform storage and maintenance of samples in tissue bank
- Requisition and store laboratory supplies, consumables, and reagents
- Maintain QC standards within CAP and CLIA guidelines.
- Perform instrument maintenance for histology platforms such as stainers, coverslippers, embedding station, etc.
- Comply with and actively participate in implementation of process improvements
- Complete documentation using Good Documentation Practices (GDP) in accordance with Clinical Lab/QA guidelines
Requirements / Qualifications
- BS/BA in biology, chemistry, or related science, or equivalent experience
- Experience in maintaining regulatory and QC standards per CAP and CLIA guidelines
- Strong sense of responsibility, urgency and integrity; ability to work flexibly to meet changing project scopes and timelines
- Detail oriented, organized, and personally accountable with strong problem solving skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and working knowledge of Internet for business use
- Successful record of ensuring procedure and process integrity for delivery of quality results
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Participation in tasks requiring coordination of activities, resources and timelines with other departments in order to achieve customer, organization, and corporate goals
