Job Title: Software Developer (full-stack PHP)

Location: This role is 100% remote, and can be based anywhere in the UK, Ireland or Western Europe.

At ICON, it's our people that set us apart.

As a global provider of drug development solutions, our work is serious business. But that doesn't mean you can't have fun while you do it. With our vision to be the partner of choice in drug development, we hire only the best and brightest in the industry! Are you one of them?

At ICON, we have an incredible opportunity for a Software Developer (full-stack PHP) to join the team in our Leopardstown, Dublin 18 location.

The Role:

This is an opportunity to join the existing software development team within Language Services.

Our Language Services team is part of our Commercialization and Outcomes group, and is a global team providing translation of clinical trial related materials for both internal and external clients.

The Language Services group consists of teams with varied responsibilities, managing projects and liaising with our clients and freelance translators.

The software development team develops and maintains a suite of applications for use by our staff, customers, and suppliers, covering areas such as project management, customer requests, supplier invoicing, and integration with other tools used by the business. All of our team are development generalists, and we work on a mixture of new projects and legacy applications. We have a strong focus on automated testing and code quality.

Most of our codebase is the usual mix of PHP, Javascript/Typescript, HTML, and CSS, and our main database is MySQL, but we encourage innovation within the team: we have worked with Elastic Search, Scala, C# .NET, and Java at various points, and we have also discussed the use of AWS and Go for an upcoming project.

What's in it for you?

  • Full-time remote working
  • Flexible working hours: quality and consistency of output are more important to us than clocking in at 9am and out at 5pm.
  • Work on long-term bespoke software projects. You'll have a major input into the design and architecture of all of Language Services' software projects.
  • Have the opportunity to have a say in the technical direction of the Language Services group.
  • Support to develop your technical skills and interests.
  • The chance to attend relevant industry conferences and workshops.

What you will need:

  • At least two years' experience working in web development in a professional environment, ideally with a focus on PHP
  • Excellent written & spoken English
  • Experience in all of the following areas:
    • PHP
    • Javascript
    • Testing including Test-Driven Development (TDD)
    • Web technologies such as HTTP, APIs, HTML, AJAX, CSS, etc.
    • Relational databases including MySQL
    • Git version control
  • An interest in design patterns and building code that adheres to clean code principles.
  • Knowledge of the following would be beneficial but is not essential:
    • CakePHP
    • Laravel
    • VueJS

  • You are driven to develop your own skills and stay up-to-date.
  • You are a good communicator, especially with non-technical people.
  • You have access to previous examples of your work and are willing for us to approach previous employers or clients for testimonials/references.
  • You have a private, dedicated home-working space, you live in the UK and are able to travel to an ICON office a couple of times a year (social distancing permitting).

If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
