Site Engagement at ICON: Daniela's Journey
Building Bridges in Clinical Research: Daniela's Journey at ICON
Daniela Rocco's career in clinical research has been driven by something straightforward but powerful: connection. From her early days as a Clinical Research Associate to her current role as Site Engagement Liaison, she's focused on building strong relationships between sponsors, sites and patients.
For Daniela, it's these partnerships that make the difference in delivering quality trials and bringing new treatments to the people who need them most.Starting out: science with a purpose
Daniela's route into the industry began with a deep interest in global health challenges. Her PhD focused on paediatric treatment for Chagas disease, a neglected tropical illness that disproportionately affects vulnerable populations.
"That work opened my eyes to the inequalities in healthcare," she says. "It was both challenging and deeply motivating. I wanted to be part of finding solutions." After years in academia, she moved into the pharmaceutical industry through a three-month internship with Novartis in Basel, Switzerland. "That experience showed me another path. One where research could translate more directly into patient impact." When the opportunity came up to join ICON as a CRA, she went for it. "I knew ICON had a strong reputation for quality and collaboration. It felt like the right place to grow."Growing Through Challenges & Support
Moving from academic research to clinical operations wasn't without its hurdles. "There were moments of self-doubt," she admits. "The pace is faster, the expectations are high, and you're responsible for so many moving parts."
But what helped her through were the people around her. "My team, my colleagues, my managers, they were always supportive. That encouragement gave me the confidence to keep going, to take on new responsibilities and explore different opportunities." One of the biggest shifts in her career came when she moved from CRA to her current role as Site Engagement Liaison. "At first, I wasn't sure I wanted to step away from direct site monitoring," she explains. "I loved the interactions with investigators and study staff. That personal connection is what motivates me." But the new role offered a way to stay close to sites whilst taking on a broader view. "Now, I'm still building those relationships, but I'm also helping to align sponsor and site needs, making sure processes run more smoothly and everyone gets better outcomes."The Power of Partnership
In her current role, Daniela acts as a bridge between sponsors, CROs and investigative sites. She supports site selection, qualification and activation, working closely with all stakeholders to ensure clarity, compliance and collaboration.
"What makes a strong partnership?" she asks. "Trust, transparency and communication. Every country, every site, every investigator has their own way of working. You have to listen first, understand their environment (regulatory, cultural, logistical) and then work together to find the best path forward." She's worked with teams across Europe, Latin America and North America, adapting her approach based on context. "Each region has its own healthcare infrastructure, its own timelines, its own expectations. Being flexible and culturally aware is essential." Despite the differences, one thing stays constant: the shared goal. "Everyone wants the trial to succeed. Everyone cares about patient safety. When you start from that common ground, collaboration becomes possible, even when things get complex."Proud Moments: Contributing to Medical Milestones
Among the many studies Daniela has supported, one stands out as her proudest achievement: contributing to the development of the first RSV vaccine indicated for pregnant women to protect their newborns from birth.
"It was such a meaningful project," she says. "RSV has no cure, and this was the first vaccine designed to prevent it in infants. Knowing that my work played even a small part in bringing this to life was incredibly moving." For her, that moment captured the real purpose of clinical research. "We talk about data, timelines, processes, and they matter. But at the end of the day, it's about changing lives. This vaccine will save babies. That's something I'll always carry with me."Looking Ahead: Curiosity & Growth
Whilst Daniela is committed to her current role, she keeps an eye on what might come next. "I've always been interested in project management," she says. "Understanding how a whole study comes together, the planning, the coordination, the delivery, that fascinates me."
She sees it as a natural progression. "Every role I've had has taught me something new. If the opportunity comes to move into clinical trial management, I'd be ready to embrace it, probably in the next year or two." Technology is another area she's keen to explore further. "AI, digital tools, decentralised trials, they're reshaping our industry. I want to stay ahead, learn how these innovations can improve efficiency and patient experience, and help guide their use in a responsible way."A Culture of Collaboration
For Daniela, staying with ICON has been about more than career progression. It's about being part of a culture that values people, partnership and purpose.
"This isn't a company that just talks about collaboration," she says. "It lives it. Whether you're in operations, medical affairs, safety or finance, everyone works together towards the same goal." She also appreciates the flexibility ICON offers. "I work remotely, but I never feel isolated. We have regular calls, virtual check-ins, team meetings. I keep my camera on, I speak up, it helps me stay connected." And when she visits the office? "It's energising. You see familiar faces, have spontaneous conversations, share ideas. That sense of community matters."Advice for Those Starting Out
Her message to anyone considering a career in clinical research is clear: stay curious, be open to growth and value your connections.
"Don't be afraid of change," she says. "Some of the best opportunities come when you step outside your comfort zone. And don't underestimate the power of relationships, with your team, your sites, your mentors. They'll support you, challenge you and help you grow." For those aiming higher? "Keep learning. Take initiative. Show up with energy and integrity. At ICON, if you're willing to put in the effort, the company will support your development every step of the way." For Daniela, that support, combined with a shared mission, is what makes ICON more than just a workplace. It's a place where careers are built, and where every contribution counts.Sign up for post alerts
