This is an opportunity to join the existing software development team within Language Services. Our Language Services team is part of our Commercialization and Outcomes group, and is a global team providing translation of clinical trial related materials for both internal and external clients. 

The Language Services group consists of teams with varied responsibilities, managing projects and liaising with our clients and freelance translators.

The responsibilities of a Senior Software Engineer include:

  • Working on application development tasks assigned by the team lead

  • Taking a lead on more complex software development tasks, from architecture to implementation

  • Working on devops and infrastructure tasks (e.g. query optimization, CI pipelines, logging, etc.)

  • Reviewing and providing feedback on code written by other members of the team

  • Pairing with and mentoring other members of the team.

  • Leading team design discussions.

What we work on

The software development team develops and maintains a suite of applications for use by our staff, customers, and suppliers, covering areas such as project management, customer requests, supplier invoicing, and integration with other tools used by the business. All of our team are development generalists.

Because we write code for long-lived applications, we have a strong focus on writing maintainable, well-designed, well-tested code. We currently have more than 14,000 tests in our PHPUnit suite. Our backend code is written in PHP, backed by a MySQL database, and we’re running 8.1 in production. Our main application uses CakePHP, and we have another application that uses Laravel.

Our frontend code is written in Javascript/Typescript with some use of VueJS.

Required skills & experience

  • At least five years’ experience working in PHP application development in a professional environment

  • Experience of maintaining and developing a long-term application in a team

  • Excellent written and spoken English; the ability to describe complex technical problems using concise and precise language; the ability to describe technical issues in lay terms to non-technical colleagues

  • Good problem-solving skills

  • Object -oriented PHP, including experience of an MVC framework and Composer

  • Understanding/experience of newer features of PHP (8.0, 8.1, 8.2, etc), and an interest in what is new/coming in the language

  • Typescript, Javascript, HTML, and CSS

  • Experience of applying the SOLID principles and design patterns to real-world software

  • Experience of Test-Driven Design (TDD)

  • Experience of devops/infrastructure tasks

  • Strong understanding of Git on the command line
