Job Description Summary:
ICON Global Medical Communications (GMC) Scientific Services Interns will provide scientific and relevant editorial support to assist in the development and execution of assigned deliverables, while gaining exposure to Medical Communications industry and GMC practices. This is a paid internship and the successful candidate (employee) will report to a senior scientific team member on the assigned client account.
Job Description:
- As determined by your assigned Scientific Director, become aware of and learn about content development and writing processes, from inception to delivery
- Interact with assigned team members to assist as directed in content development, editorial, and project management tasks to help ensure that projects are delivered on-time, on-budget and meet client expectations
- Perform and/or contribute to literature searches (e.g., using PubMed, other online databases) and associated alerts that the ICON team provides to the client as directed
- Create PDF documents (e.g., mock submissions) as directed in preparation for manuscripts and abstracts to be submitted to scientific journals and medical congresses
- Search for and download as directed author guidelines from identified journal and congress website to internal databases (e.g. SharePoint)
- Order scientific/medical publications (articles) for team medical writers as requested
- Learn about and help prepare written deliverables, e.g., abstracts and posters for medical/scientific congress presentations, as directed
- Help manage deadlines and timelines as directed
- Utilize open, transparent and respectful communications to engender trust, efficiencies and overall excellence in the completion and delivery of assigned projects
- Learn about and comply with company sanctioned processes for delivery of projects through adherence to best practices/SOPs and use of internal systems (for example, Sharepoint, BOX,) that enable efficient and effective execution
- Attend company, team, and department meetings, coming prepared to provide updates on the status of assigned projects
- Record all project time as directed
- Perform any other duties as required or assigned
- As a member of GMC scientific services staff, the intern is expected to embrace and contribute to ICON’s core values of Integrity, Collaboration, Agility, and Inclusion and to “Own It” at ICON.
What you need
- PhD or other relevant advanced degree in scientific and/or medical fields
- Applicants who have recently obtained their degree are encouraged to apply
- Applicants who expect to have their advanced degree granted prior to the start of the program are encouraged to apply; in this case. eligibility to participate will be determined on a case by case basis
- Exceptional time management skills
- Demonstrable command of the English language (read, write, and speak)
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills
- Desire and ability to problem-solve
- Familiarity preferred but ability to learn and gain proficiency with network directories/databases is required (for example, Knowledge Manager, DataVision)
- Familiarity preferred but ability to learn and gain proficiency with commonly used software is required, including but not limited to MS Office suite, SharePoint, EndNote, PRISM, Acrobat Pro, Knowledge Manager
- An interest in and desire to learn about the drug development process and the medical communications industry
- A love of the written word and a desire to see projects through to completion
- The following qualifications are helpful but not required
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journal content
- Familiarity with AMA, ICMJE, and GPP guidelines
