Pathologist

Location: Farmingdale, NY

 

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a fast paced, busy environment for a leading global provider of outsourced development services to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries.

The Pathologist will play a critical role within ICON Laboratory Services (ILS); responsible for diagnosis of Surgical biopsy specimens, microscopically correlate findings if required and working with Histology staff , giving feedback for continuous quality improvement and following Quality plan.

 

Overview of the Role

  • Recognize, exemplify and adhere to ICON's values which centre around our commitment to People, Clients and Performance.
  • Responsible for developing and validating formalin fixed paraffin embedded special stains, immunohistochemistry, and in-situ hybridization stains. 
  • Responsible for developing and validating formalin fixed paraffin embedded fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) assays. 
  • Interprets ER, PR, and HER2 immunohistochemical stains as well as successful participation in CAP proficiency testing and CAP inspections related to pathology.
  • Participates in standards of performance, quality control, and quality improvement, including external proficiency programs.
  • Responsible for participating in quality assurance program in pathology covering, pre analytical, analytical and post analytical areas.
  • Responsible for assisting in technical oversight in US Laboratory, and bringing in new methodologies as required.
  • Responsible for technical oversight in US Laboratory, to oversee gross specimens or grossing specimens.
  • Interprets, surgical biopsy specimens of different sub specialties', correlates special stains, and immunohistochemistry’ ISH and FISH in final diagnosis or interpret as required; communicates laboratory data.
  • Responsible for standardization of Diagnostic criteria to other pathologist.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of current medical advancements through continued education and memberships. External participation in PIP and CME. Programs certificates should be filed with ICON. 
  • Serves as the medical officer for all pathology staff members, consultants and clients..
  • Reads and follows all SOP’s in Pathology and responsible to oversee training
  • Author’s documents, reviews research and clinical protocols pertinent to daily operations and future business as required.
  • Review of peripheral smears, protein electrophoresis, cellular immunology, hematopathology.
  • As a Pathologist the employee is expected to recognize the importance of and create a culture of process improvement with a focus on streamlining our processes adding value to our business and meeting client needs.

Supervision

  • Ensure all necessary training is provided to his/her staff to improve their job performance and knowledge.
  • Proactively participate in the selection and recruitment of suitable and qualified staff.
  • Act as mentor/role model for Laboratory personnel.
  • Support department in establishing and accomplishing mutually agreeable goals that contribute to the success of the organization as a whole.
  • Technical over sight for all technical areas of the pathology laboratory operations.

Role Requirements

  • Post Graduate Degree, MD or local equivalent.
  • Board certification in Anatomic Pathology by American Boards of Pathology.
  • Board Certification in Hematopathology.
  • Board Certification in Molecular Pathology preferred.
  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience as a Pathologist practicing surgical pathology and hematopathology.
  • Able to demonstrate proficiency in all areas of Surgical Pathology.
  • Board Certification in Hematopathology with competency and experience in signing out Bone Marrows, Flow interpretation and Molecular experience.
  • Ability to deal with high stress situations, ability to managing competing priorities
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Certification from NYS, CAP or local equivalent.
