Science Writer/Editor - Rockville, MD

ICON Government and Public Health Solutions (IGP) is seeking a Science Writer/Editor to join our team to support the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Responsibilities:

We are currently searching for a Science Writer. This position will develop scientific communication products and contribute to communications plans to generate understanding of NIAID funded research in areas including HIV, TB, mpox, sexually transmitted infections, allergy, immunology, and transplantation.

This position will operate in a fast-paced team and perform duties including;

• Develop high-quality written press, web, and social media materials
•  Work diplomatically and collaboratively with disease area subject matter experts to anticipate, prepare and finalize communications for specific milestones
• Engage in media relations, mainly targeted pitching and responding to inquiries
• Other tasks to serve the mission of NIAID's Office of Communications and Government Relations.
• Research and write in appropriate scientific or technical style various communication products, to include press releases, newsletter articles, media releases, fliers, web content and video and podcast scripts.
• Identify needs and develop content for various communication mediums to increase visibility of the program.
• Attend routine staff meetings to gather information necessary to develop effective communication projects, plans and strategies.
• Monitor the effectiveness of media campaigns through traditional and social media channels, assess results and report findings.
• Coordinate photographic and videographic resources to capture quality imagining and footage for posting to social media and Internet sites with appropriate captions.
• Respond to media inquiries promptly.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with members of the press and external stakeholders.
• Attend workshops, seminars and meetings to stay abreast of current scientific and policy trends.
• Coordinate with other program offices to create outreach and engagement plans.

Qualifications:

Education:

• Bachelor’s Degree in related discipline

Experience:

• One (1) year of experience with the following:
  • Social media
  • Public relations
  • Media relations
  • Strategic communications
  • Message development
  • Copy editing
  • Science writing
  • Microsoft Office
• Demonstrates expertise with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
• Must be a US Citizen
• Ability to obtain a Level 5: Public Trust
• Location: Rockville, MD
