What it's like to work in the IT team of the world's best CRO

ICON was once again announced as the best CRO in the Vaccine Industry Excellence (ViE) Awards. Being recognised as the best in the industry wouldn’t be possible without each one of our colleagues, and there are many of them working in teams across the globe. We spoke to Rathna who leads an application support team and has been working with ICON for 12 years. Read on to hear about the many opportunities to learn and share knowledge within the organization and why she thinks ICON is a great company to work with:

“ICON is one of the companies that has a strong reputation in its approach to clinical development”

As Rathna sees it, ICON is a classic example of a dynamic and fast-developing company. There are many learning curves and this is exactly what attracted her to work with a leading clinical research organization (CRO). While bigger companies in the industry have a specific set of rules designed, Rathna explains that ICON doesn’t have a benchmark and this means the company can expand beyond its boundaries.

With over 19 years’ experience working in the support industry, Rathna has mapped out a successful IT career and has many achievements to be proud of. Having worked her way up to Senior Manager in the Application Support team, Rathna shares that she’s now been in this role for five years and has the joy of managing a talented IT operations team. Any application that is used in the company will be supported by her team so they have the satisfaction of knowing they’re contributing to something much larger. She explains that the great atmosphere at ICON and the brilliant work they do are the two main reasons she loves her role.

“I’m passionate about my work and this is where I want to be”

In her 12 years at ICON, Rathna has taken on many different roles and as a result, has enjoyed a lot of variety in her work. She started as a Team Lead, having come to the company with some previous experience, and throughout the years she’s played the role of a project manager, has built support teams in India from the scratch and now plays a critical role in both onboarding and retirement of applications to ensure successful support plans and processes are in place.

Defining metrics, service level agreements (SLAs) and tracking continuous process improvements are a huge part of her senior role too. Rathna tells us that she has always been challenged with critical projects from which she’s created some great success stories. She’s been a part of high profile critical client audits and has participated in several management essential programs in varied forms across IT Operations.

One thing that Rathna is eager to call attention to – and a reason why she’s remained with the company for over a decade – is that ICON gives its colleagues the opportunity to learn in any capacity.
